Every August, thousands of gym, studio, and martial arts school owners run a back-to-school promotion.

Most don’t work.

Back-to-school is a real opportunity. Parents are actively looking for kids’ activities. Adults are ready to restart their fitness routines before fall sets in. The intent is there.

The problem is the promotion itself.

See the full back-to-school system that fixes all three problems

Here are the three most common reasons back-to-school promos fall flat, and what to do about each one.

Why doesn’t a gym or martial arts school’s back-to-school promotion work?

Most gym, studio, and martial arts school back-to-school promotions fail for one of three reasons: they send traffic to a Facebook post or homepage instead of a dedicated landing page built for a single offer, they follow up once or not at all instead of running a short email sequence at Day 0, Day 3, and Day 7, or they skip UTM tracking and can’t tell which channel drove results. Each fix is low-cost and doesn’t require a marketing agency or technical expertise, studio owners who address all three typically see meaningfully better results than running the same offer without a system.

Why this is worth fixing before school is in session

Back-to-school is a short window: roughly six weeks from early August through mid-September. If you’ve been running promotions that don’t convert, you’re putting effort in every year without building on what you learned.

Understanding why a promo falls flat is the only way to fix it before the window opens.

Failure mode 1: No dedicated landing page

The most common mistake: someone sees your back-to-school offer on Facebook or Instagram, clicks the link, and lands on your homepage.

Your homepage isn’t built to convert. It has a navigation menu, your full services list, maybe a popup. It asks visitors to do too many things at once.

A dedicated landing page has one job: get the visitor to fill out a form. No navigation, no distractions, just an offer and a clear next step.

When you send promotion traffic to a landing page instead of your homepage, you convert more of it, because the page was built for that specific offer, not your entire business.

The fix: Build a single page for your back-to-school offer. It doesn’t need to be long. A headline, three bullets, and a form. The Back-to-School Enrollment Playbook has a fill-in-the-blank landing page copy template you can use today.

Failure mode 2: No follow-up sequence

Someone fills out your form. You reach out once. They don’t respond. You move on.

That’s most studios’ entire follow-up strategy.

Here’s what’s actually happening: the person who filled out your form was genuinely interested. They did it during their lunch break, or while their kid was in the bath. Then life happened. They forgot. Your confirmation email sat unread.

Most of them are still interested, they just got busy.

A three-email sequence, sent at Day 0, Day 3, and Day 7 after the form submission, catches most of these people before they fully forget. The Day 7 email (“your trial is still waiting”) is the one that surprises studio and martial arts school owners most. A lot of people reply to that one.

The fix: Write three short emails and set calendar reminders or automate them. The Back-to-School Enrollment Playbook has all three, copy-paste ready.

Failure mode 3: No tracking

At the end of August, most studio and martial arts school owners can tell you how many new members they got. Almost none can tell you where those members came from.

Did they find you on Facebook? Google? From a friend’s referral? Did the Instagram post work, or was it the email you sent to your existing member list?

Without that data, you run the same campaign next year and hope. With it, you double down on what worked and cut what didn’t.

The fix is UTM tags: small pieces of text added to the end of your landing page URL. They’re free, take about 15 minutes to set up, and show up automatically in Google Analytics under Acquisition → Traffic Sources.

Format: your-page.com?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=august-bts-systems

Use a different tag for every channel you post to. It’s the same approach we use in our payment reminder email templates: one small tag, clear attribution.

The fix: Add UTM tags to every link before you start promoting. A step-by-step UTM setup is included in the Back-to-School Enrollment Playbook.

These are solvable problems

The landing page, the follow-up sequence, and the tracking are what break down each year. Fix those three things and back-to-school stops being a guessing game.

Fix the landing page. Add the follow-up emails. Set up UTM tracking. All three take less than a day.

FAQ

Q: Do I need to run paid ads for a back-to-school campaign to work? A: No. Many studios get strong results from organic social posts, their existing email list, and word of mouth, especially when they have a clean landing page and a follow-up sequence in place. Paid ads amplify a campaign that’s already working. They don’t fix one with structural problems.

Q: What if I don’t have an email list? A: You can still run the follow-up sequence. You’re sending to people who fill out your landing page form, not a pre-existing list. That’s a smaller pool, but it’s also your warmest leads. Start there.

Q: How do I know if my landing page is actually working? A: Look at your form completion rate. If people visit the page but don’t fill out the form, the problem is the copy or the offer. If people fill out the form but don’t show up, the problem is the follow-up sequence. Each failure point tells you something different.

Q: Can this system work for adult memberships, not just kids’ programs? A: Yes. The copy shifts slightly, since back-to-school season is also when adults recommit to fitness routines, but the landing page structure, form fields, follow-up emails, and UTM tracking apply the same way.
